Broadening Horizons: My Journey Through the KIPPRA Young Professionals Program
My name is Morris Kateeti Mbaluka, and I was privileged to be part of the 2023/2024 cohort of the Young Professionals (YP) program at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). With a background in statistics, my initial research focus was on methodology and analysis. However, the YP program broadened my perspective on research.
I learned how to construct research problems more effectively using tools like problem trees, ensuring that each study was grounded in both theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Additionally, I gained the skill to provide focused policy recommendations that could drive actionable change.
One of the most impactful aspects of the program was learning about monitoring and evaluation, particularly impact analysis, which will significantly shape my future research endeavors. During my time at KIPPRA, I co-authored and wrote an information note, two blogs, and a discussion paper, all of which enhanced my research and writing skills.
I also had the opportunity to contribute to the planning of KIPPRA’s regional annual conference, participate as an attendee, and even take part in a panel discussion. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of policy research but also sharpened my public engagement skills. I highly recommend this program to anyone under 35 with a master’s degree who is looking to improve their research capabilities and contribute to meaningful policy development.
